25 Years

1981 - 2006

In geological terms, a millennium is a little more than the blink of an eye -- which makes a quarter-century something less than a nanosecond. In the life of a modern American city, the same 25 years is a generation, at least. In the life of a newspaper, it's an era.

With this issue, Gambit Weekly celebrates its first 25 years in print and looks back at how we as a newspaper -- and New Orleans as a city -- have evolved since we first hit the streets in 1981. The changes have been many in number and, well, geological in scale.

Despite the devastation wrought by Hurricane Katrina, New Orleans is still a city that rocks. We look forward to covering -- and celebrating -- the next 25 years, and we're fairly certain they'll be at least as earthshaking as the last 25. Enjoy!
