Artful Teaching Workshops with Kurt Wootton, ArtsLiteracy Project

Three teaching workshops offer training and professional development in a range of topics from Kurt Wootton, Co-Founder of the ArtsLiteracy Project in the Education Department of Brown University. A light dinner will be served at 4:30pm and sessions will run from 5pm-7:30pm.

March 14 - Linking Literacy and the Arts: Building the Global Classroom
Learn how to capitalize on the cultural diversity of students while helping them gain literacies necessary for academic success. This workshop provides concrete practices for integrating the arts, literacies, and languages in a way that welcomes and challenges all students.

March 15 - Roaring, Rolling, and Gnawing: Designing Educational Experiences with the Performance Cycle
A vigorous, hands-on workshop introduces the Performance Cycle – a structure for integrating performance and various art forms into numerous educational settings.

March 16 – To Understand is to Invent: Designing Creative Reading Experiences
*For preK-2nd grade educators*
How can we teach reading skills to students in a way that involves a sense of play and imagination and honors the whole child as a complex human being? Wootton teaches about an approach to reading that integrates the arts in ways that hold students at the creative center of the reading process.

Reaching Students with Autism Through the Arts with Ryan Hourigan

Many teachers have noticed an increase in the number of students with autism included in their classrooms. In these lecture and discussion sessions, Ryan Hourigan, Associate Director of the School of Music at Ball State University, will discuss how the arts help improve communication, support cognitive and memory strengthening, and promote positive emotional behavior and socialization. A light dinner will be served at 4:30pm and sessions will run from 5pm-7:30pm.
