Re: “Howlin' Wolf

One of the worst shows I saw at Jazz Fest 2011. I am a Mos Def fan, and I love New Orleans brass, but this show was incredibly lame. Advertising suggested that Mos Def and Hot 8 would be playing together, but in the end, Mos Def came out for half of one song. Hot 8 is way overrated. There are far better brass bands in New Orleans. I saw the Stooges for the first time, several nights before, and there was no comparison. The transition from full brass of Hot 8 to Mos Def on turntables was a giant buzz kill. Mos Def's set was full of garbled turntable noise and uninspired rapping. At first I thought it was the venue, but then I saw Mos Def play with John Legend the next day at the fest. He rapped for about 2 minutes incoherently, and then stood on the stage for the encore. WTF? Come on Mos, step it up!!!

Best show first week-end was Trombone Shorty during Tip's event on Monday night.
