Re: “The Stinky Cheese Man and Other Fairly Stupid Tales

This was a favorite book when my sister & I were growing up. A great show for the young at heart to share with the young ones.

Re: “Preview: Celebration in the Oaks

I have enjoyed the Christmas in the Oaks but sure wish the driving tour was an option. I miss the giant oaks that were there before Katrina. Definitely have great memories.

Re: “Surveillance cameras in bars, homes could feed into New Orleans crime monitoring center

It worries me that places are going to be required to get cameras & connect them to the city's system. I understand the need for safety but what about the small local business just trying to afford to keep the doors open. Will there be a tax break for them to pay for the equipment? Will the city supply it? Maybe the city officials have been watching reruns of the show, Person of Interest. It makes for interesting tv but I don't know how it'll work here.

Re: “I-10: Ten Things to Know in New Orleans this Week (Nov. 21, 2017)

I think it's great that a tech company wants to bring 2,000 jobs here but I wonder where they will get the skilled workers to fill them. Most of the skilled IT workers have left the state for places that have jobs that pay a living wage. I would love to work in Louisiana again but there are more opportunities in Georgia for my skills. I sure hope they don't fill the jobs with H1 visa people. We have enough competition for jobs already. It would be better to train the people we have & use them.

Re: “Sewerage & Water Board turbine repaired after fire

This should be titled Liar, Liar Turbines On Fire. I hope that there will be more oversight on the pumping situation now. If the city was shut down after heavy rain, what will they do if a hurricane comes close? Did they learn nothing from Katrina?

Re: “Commentary: Paging Dr. Cassidy — move on

As a physician, Cassidy should be well aware that people with insurance tend to go to doctors sooner than people with no insurance. We had a family friend that couldn't afford insurance but made just enough that she didn't qualify for Medicaid. She had stomach issues for months but couldn't afford to go to a doctor. Finally, when the pain became unbearable, she went to the emergency room. Tests showed she had advanced stomach cancer. She passed away less than a year later. If she had access to affordable healthcare, things might have had a different ending.
I am fed up with people that are in elected office & vote with their party even when they know there are better options or that doing so isn't the best plan. They should be loyal to the interests of the people in the country that depend on them whether there's an R or a D on their voter registration.

Re: “Sen. John Neely Kennedy calls for work requirement for many Medicaid recipients

I fully support those that are capable of working being required to at least make the effort. While the plan might have good intentions, it doesn't address an important fact. Many of the people on Medicaid lack the skills & experience to get a job. There are a lot of issues that need addressing for this plan to work.

Maybe there could be a requirement that if you apply for medicaid you can be required to attend a job training class or assessment. They could work together with the unemployment office to do that & make the applicant submit proof of a job search like is needed to get unemployment benefits. There should also be a job bank that matches these people with job openings.

Not everyone getting assistance wants to live that way forever. Many just don't know how to do anything different. I wonder if Mr Kennedy has spoken to people getting assistance to understand what they really need to break free. Do your homework first & then write a bill.

Re: “Deacon John Moore: "I'm an entertainer"

Deacon John played at my mother's prom in 1972. She has never forgotten what great music that was. He played a free concert at the Covington Traihead in April & she was able to go. He hadn't lost a bit of his spark & talent. I hope he will continue to share his music & personality for many years to come.
