TRIBUTE TO THE CLASSICAL ARTS: A BRIEF HISTORY

An annual Classical Arts Awards Luncheon began in 1994 at the Monteleone Hotel hosted by John and Anne Monteleone Burr.It began as a celebration expanding the Classical Arts category of the Big Easy Entertainment Awards. It is now the premier event paying tribute to the performers and supporters of Classical Music, Operaand Dance.More than a dozen awards are given in those categories, as well as special recognition awards for patrons and educational efforts.

Regional celebrities including WWL TV's Angela Hill serve as masters of ceremonies.

A highlight each year is the Lifetime Achievement Awardin the Classical Arts. In 2009 Jacqueline Fry of the New Orleans Dance Academy will receive this award. Additional special categories include the Patron of the Classical Arts Award and the Arts Education Award. Additional Special Recognition Awards may also be given.

Fans, patrons and performers involved with the classical arts are invited to attend this very special event which features a gourmet luncheon by Monteleone Hotel Catering Director Keith Donatto, awards presentations by community celebrities, and classical music, opera and dance performances.

The event is sponsored by The Gambit, WWNO Radio, The Hotel Monteleone, Hall Piano Company, Uptown Costume & Dancewear and Adler's Jewelers.

Margo DuBos, publisher of Gambit, serves as Executive Producer.Executive Director Gloria Powers works closely with the Arts Council of New Orleans, the New Orleans Opera Association, the New Orleans Ballet Association, the Louisiana Philharmonic Orchestra, and the Jefferson Performing Arts Society to make each year's Tribute to the Classical Arts the best possible.
