22nd annual Back to the Beach Festival

Recalling the years when Pontchartrain Beach drew New Orleanians to the lakefront for amusement rides, swimming and concerts, the 22nd annual Back to the Beach Festival features three days of live music and activities along the waterfront at Kenner's Laketown. Kermit Ruffins & the Barbecue Swingers, Rockin' Dopsie Jr. & the Zydeco Twisters, Christian Serpas and Ghost Town and Bobby Cure & the Summertime Blues headline the musical entertainment. Activities include a run/walk on Friday, a motorcycle rally on Saturday and a classic and custom car show on Sunday. Anglers competing in the fishing rodeo can draw from the Pontchartrain Basin. The festival also features arts and crafts vendors and food booths. The event is a fundraiser for the Lake Pontchartrain Basin Foundation and recalls when Pontchartrain Beach was a popular recreation destination from when it opened in the late 1920s until its closure in 1983. Tickets $10 adults, $8 students, $4 children 12 and under, free for members of the Lake Pontchartrain Basin Foundation. — Marguerite Lucas
