Bayou Classic Battle of the Bands

7 p.m. Fri., Nov. 28

Louisiana Superdome, 1500 Girod St., 587-3663

The annual Bayou Classic football game between Southern and Grambling universities, now in its 35th year, is like the Harvard/Yale game of historically black colleges. It's less about the gridiron activities than the accompanying pomp, circumstance and tradition. For many fans, the most exciting action on the field actually ends well before the game begins on Saturday afternoon. The highlight of the weekend is the annual throwdown between the two schools' world-famous and award-winning marching bands — an explosion of brass, precision drumming and wild, synchronized dancing on Friday night. To band students throughout the United States, the prestige of a spot in Southern's Human Jukebox or Grambling's Tiger Band would trump a full ride to Harvard or Yale. Besides the display of Broadway-quality dance teams, high-stepping drum majors and the awesome thunder of the bands themselves, there's also a step show, showcasing the signature dance moves of both schools' top fraternities and sororities. Tickets $15. — Alison Fensterstock
