Courtyard Brewery (1020 Erato St.; serves a steady rotation of house-brewed beers and offerings from other breweries and is introducing several new beers in coming weeks.

First up is How to Live in Style, originally brewed in conjunction with Modern Times Beer ( in California. This hazy, New England-style IPA is crafted with Mosaic, Denali and Amarillo hops. It's scheduled for release this week.

Courtyard also will offer a stout brewed with donuts from District Donuts.Sliders.Brew ( This roasty, slightly sweet and dark beer should be available in August.

In September, the brewers will collaborate with Aslin Beer Company ( in Virginia to create an IPA with experimental hops.

"We're already brewing about 60 percent IPAs now," says Courtyard founder Scott Wood. "[We're] pushing toward 70 percent by the end of the year, and we can't keep [up with the demand] on tap."

Wood will enter several of Courtyard's brews in the Great American Beer Festival competition in Denver in October. The four entries are Baby IPA, a session IPA; Sonic Youth in 1983, a full-bodied American pale ale; All's Ephemeral, a sour beer made with hibiscus; and Equally Dreadful Cities, a braggot made with a significant amount of honey that is something between a beer and a mead.

In other brewery news, Zac and Cari Caramonta of Gnarly Barley Brewing Company ( in Hammond are paying homage to their alma mater, Southeastern Louisiana University, with a new brew called Lion Up. The American-style wheat ale is designed to be light enough to enjoy in the summer heat and low in alcohol for fall tailgating. The release party is Saturday, Aug. 5, at the brewery. The beer will be available throughout the Northshore region. A portion of proceeds from the beer's sales will support efforts to prevent alcohol abuse on campus.
