Tchoupitoulas Beer Garden opens in New Orleans’ Warehouse District

  Tchoupitoulas Beer Garden (840 Tchoupitoulas St.; is the latest in a series of craft breweries and beer halls in the Warehouse District, joining World of Beer (300 Julia St., 504-299-3599; and Wood Pizza Bistro & Taphouse (404 Andrew Higgins Drive, 504-281-4893;

  The 4,400 square-foot bar and restaurant is modeled on a Munich-style beer garden, though it's all indoors. There are two bars, exposed brick walls and beer garden-style communal seating at long tables. German and German-style beers are served in 22-ounce steins, and choices include Weihenstephan Hefeweissbier, Ayinger Oktoberfest and Kostritzer Schwarzbier. Louisiana brews include Bayou Teche Cocodrie and Covington Kolsch, among others.

  Rotating boilermaker specials include the Kentucky Bubbly, a beer-and-shot combo of Stella Artois Cidre and Maker's Mark and the TBG RyePA, a shot of Rittenhouse Rye and Goose Island IPA.

  The menu offers small plates and larger "bites" such as bratwurst, served with house-made mustard and grape jam and Bavarian-style goulash with beef, pork and potatoes — served on its own or draped over debris fries and topped with cheddar. Braised pork belly is served with smoked apple jam and hickory feta crema, pickled grapes, cilantro and arugula. There also are hand-cut French fries, flatbreads and charcuterie.

  Payment takes an unconventional and awkward route. Patrons have to buy doubloons — plastic coins valued at $4.50 each — to make purchases. Drinks and food are listed in doubloon prices instead of their dollar value, so there's a bit of math required, which can stall ordering times.

  There are games including cards, board games, darts, foosball and ping pong.

  Tchoupitoulas Beer Garden is open 4 p.m. to midnight Monday through Thursday and 11 a.m. to 1 a.m. Friday and Saturday.
