@Owen, many employers -- certainly the fast food companies -- can pay these wages. However, instead of paying a living wage, they pay less, keep inflated profits at the top, and let public assistance programs pick up the slack. These programs come out of all of our pockets, while income and wealth becomes more and more concentrated in the top 1%. That's not fair to you, me, or the minimum wage earners. Have a look at this article:

@Mark Bradley, because the current minimum wage is not a living wage. Cost of living continues to go up, but the minimum hasn't risen in decades. The adjustment has to come from the bottom. No one should work 40 hours a week and struggle to pay rent and feed their family, regardless of the skill level of the job.
