Best of the Beat Awards

The rebuilding of the New Orleans music scene includes acknowledging all the hard work and achievements of the musicians over the past year. That's what makes this year's Best of the Beat Awards particularly special. (But then, doesn't EVERY annual event we're celebrating post-Katrina feel particularly special?) This year's awards, sponsored by Offbeat magazine, celebrates the ongoing work of several local legends: Vocalist Wanda Rouzan will be presented with the Education Award, Irma Thomas (pictured) and Allen Toussaint will receive the Lifetime Achievement Award, the Treme Brass Band's "Uncle" Lionel Batiste will be honored with the Heartbeat Award, and George and Nina Buck will get the Music Business Award. Music performers include Anders Osborne, Shannon Powell, Quintron, Theresa Andersson, White Bitch, C.C. Adcock and the New Orleans Jazz Vipers. Food will be provided by area restaurants including Juan's Flying Burrito, Parkway Bakery & Tavern and Whole Foods. Net proceeds will go to the New Orleans Musicians' Clinic and MusiCares. Tickets $15 in advance, $20 at the door.
