Block Party 2009

Do You Feel Lucky, Punk?

Local, independent recording collective Community Records hosts the second annual Block Party — the city's only ska music festival. The all-ages, all-day-long event celebrating roots, rock and reggae is a rarity in punk-unfriendly New Orleans. Community Records founder Greg Rodrigue booked national and touring ska and punk-rock outfits for a bill headlined by Dan Potthast (of mu330), contemporary ska's godfather figure. The roped-off block between Carondelet Street and St. Charles Avenue features an outdoor stage, and the Big Top Gallery houses an inside stage for more than 15 bands, including touring groups from the Community roster (A Billion Ernies, Arm the Poor and Safety among others) and local acts like Cajun-punk rabble-rousers Zydepunks (pictured), ska songstress Maddie Ruthless and New Orleans-ska torchbearer Fatter Than Albert, which returns to the stage after a brief hiatus. DJ T-Roy spins dub and reggae records all day. Tickets $12, $10 with donation of food or clothing to New Orleans Mission.
