James Carter,

councilman for New Orleans District C, was honored in New York City Oct. 8 by the Vera Institute of Justice at the Jazz at Lincoln Center for his role in informing the public about the institute's 2007 report on the city's criminal justice system. Joel Levy, a spokesperson for Vera, says many people ignored the report, but Carter made the public aware of many of the concerns voiced in the study and has attempted to reform the city's criminal justice system through his work on the City Council.

Taylor Yarbrough,

a former student at Lusher Charter School, has been awarded a $5,000 scholarship from the Tavis Smiley Foundation as part of the foundation's annual Salute to Youth Leadership Benefit and Auction. While a student at Lusher, Yarbrough earned a certificate of artistry in creative writing and was inducted into the Outstanding Students of America organization. She is currently attending Spelman College in Atlanta and plans to earn a doctorate in psychology.

Derrick Tabb,

the snare drummer for Rebirth Brass Band and founder of the Roots of Music, a free after-school music program for kids, has been nominated for CNN's Hero of the Year award. Tabb started ROM to fill the void of disappearing school music programs and to keep children off the streets. The ROM now has a full-size marching band that plays in numerous parades. The public determines who wins Hero of the Year by voting at through Nov. 19.

Ochsner In Vitro Fertilization Center

indefinitely suspended operations after discovering its staff had mislabeled a number of frozen embryos, with some embryos reportedly missing. In vitro fertilization is a medical procedure with an average cost of $12,000 per attempt, and up to 125 people may have been affected by the mislabeling. To date, two couples have filed suit against Ochsner.
