Valerie Strecker,

a graphic designer from Slidell, had the winning T-shirt design in a competition sponsored by ONE, a nonprofit organization that fights extreme poverty in Africa. More than 58,000 people voted online in the contest's runoff of three artists. Strecker's design displays an outline of the African continent with anti-poverty slogans inside. The T-shirt will be produced on African-made, fair-trade organic cotton and is available on the ONE Web site.

New Orleans Red Dress Run Committee,

the organizing group behind the running club New Orleans Hash House Harriers' annual fun run, donated a total of $92,000 to local charities. This year's event included more than 5,500 paid runners, who sported red dresses as they drank and ran their way through a meandering downtown route, which included numerous local drinking establishments.

Myrtle C. Winbush,

a retired New Orleans accountant, was given the AARP's Andrus Award for Community Service. Winbush is the volunteer coordinator for the AARP Information Center in New Orleans and oversees a staff of 15 volunteers. She was cited for her efforts to facilitate medical and housing services for the elderly and needy. Winbush also serves on a number of boards, including the New Orleans Council on Aging and the Gilbert Academy Alumni Association.

Dwayne Muhammad,

former chief operating officer of the Housing Authority of New Orleans' Section 8 voucher program, pleaded guilty last week to stealing HANO funds. In August, a WWL-TV report revealed Muhammad and his girlfriend were using a Section 8 voucher, worth $1,400 a month, to help pay rent on the couple's apartment. At the time of his departure from HANO, Muhammad was paid an annual salary of $100,000, more than four times the income limit for a two-person household to receive assistance.
