Stewart Butler

was named the recipient of the 38th annual Ben Smith Award from the American Civil Liberties Union of Louisiana Oct. 30. Butler is a founding member of the LGBT advocacy group Lesbian and Gay Political Action Committee and a longtime advocate of LGBT rights in New Orleans. The award is named after the organization's founder. Butler will receive the honor in March.

Children's Hero Award recipients

were honored Oct. 25 by the Children's Bureau of New Orleans, a mental health organization focusing on prevention, advocacy, education and intervention efforts. This group's inaugural "Heroes" include Karen DeSalvo, Norman Francis, Stephen Hales, Cathy Harris, Calvin Johnson, Michael Lewis, Charles Rice Jr., Sally-Ann Roberts, Norma Jane Sabiston, Alison Salloum, Jackie Curtis Silverman and Warner Williams.

Wisznia | Architecture + Development

received the inaugural Tony Goldman Award Nov. 1 from the National Trust for Historic Preservation and the National Trust Community Investment Corporation for Wisznia's renovation of New Orleans' first skyscraper. The award recognizes Wisznia's $35.6 million renovation of The Maritime, built in 1893 as the Hennen Building. The award was presented at the Richard H. Driehaus National Preservation Awards in Indianapolis.

Gerald P. Estrade

pleaded guilty in U.S. District Court in Baton Rouge Nov. 4 to threatening former U.S. Attorney Jim Letten and Letten's family. Estrade admitted to FBI agents that he had planned to kill Letten and wrote a letter in 2005 or 2006 to the FBI with similar threats against Letten. Estrade faces up to 10 years in prison and a $250,000 fine.
