Kimber Lee

was named the 2014 Ruby Prize award winner by Southern Rep on Dec. 12. Lee's play brownsville song (b-side for tray) will be presented during a staged reading as part of the New Play Bacchanal Jan. 10-11 at Marigny Opera House. The annual prize is named in honor of Ruby Bridges and recognizes women playwrights of color.

Coyote Blues

donated $1,000 to Cafe Reconcile Dec. 4. The restaurant raised the money through Plates for a Purpose, during which a percentage of its sales benefited Cafe Reconcile, and Cafe Reconcile students received instruction from Coyote Blues staff. Cafe Reconcile has provided job training in the hospitality industry for more than 600 at-risk young people since it opened in 2000.

donated 600 pairs of new shoes, as well as socks and school supplies, to children at Kingsley House Dec. 17 in partnership with Shoe Carnival. Skechers' BOBS program provides shoes to a child in need every time a customer buys a pair of Skechers shoes. Kingsley House serves 7,000 people annually with its preschool and early education programs, counseling, tutoring and more.

Louisiana drivers

were ranked worst in the nation, according to a December report from Louisiana ranked in the bottom five for failure to obey driving instructions, receiving tickets and careless driving. The state also is the ninth worst for driving fatalities. This month, the Louisiana Highway Safety Commission reported that 722 pedestrians and bicyclists were killed on Louisiana highways in 2012.
