LaRita Francois-Flotte
was named a Champion For Good by Allstate Insurance Company on Aug. 14 during a surprise ceremony as part of the company's Give It Up For Good campaign. Flotte founded the Take The Lead Foundation, a New Orleans-based nonprofit youth education organization.

Locks of Love
held its 15th annual Cut-A-Thon Aug. 3 at Lakeside Shopping Center, where more than 150 people donated hair or donated $15 for a haircut to benefit the organization, which collected nearly 200 yards of hair to make wigs for children who endure hair loss following a medical diagnosis.

UnitedHealthcare Community Plan of Louisiana
donated 100 laptops to Madison Preparatory Academy computer lab in Baton Rouge and another 200 laptops to 17 community- and faith-based groups in New Orleans, Lafayette and Shreveport. UnitedHealthcare's donations aim to increase Internet access to underserved areas and have distributed more than 2,000 computers in 13 states since 2012.

New Orleans Department of Public Works
has failed to make sidewalks and crosswalks near schools in Orleans Parish safe for children walking to class, according to the Kids Walk Coalition's latest report, which analyzed sidewalk and crosswalk safety. Among the 50 public school areas in the report, 30 were deemed hazardous for kids walking or biking to school, while 12 were considered substandard. The program, part of the Tulane Preservation Research Center, also found missing crosswalks and ADA-required curb ramps.
