Coca-Cola,
lead sponsor of the annual Essence Music Festival, donated $50,000 to the City of New Orleans to implement Coke's Troops for Fitness program. The program works with the National Recreation and Parks Association to employ veterans as fitness instructors in health programs nationwide.

Ashley Garcia,
a senior studying business at Loyola University New Orleans, was among 22 college students nationwide selected to participate in the Women's Business Enterprise National Council's Student Entrepreneur Program last month in Austin, Texas. The program included mentoring from Fortune 500 companies, a pitch competition and other networking events for women pursuing business careers

Bivian "Sonny" Lee
received the 2015 Shine A Light award at the 15th annual BET Awards on June 28. Lee, whose father was New Orleans Saints player Bivian Lee Jr., received the award for his work as founder of the Son of a Saint Foundation, which provides mentorship and other resources to boys whose fathers have died or are in jail. Lee's father died when Lee was 3 years old.

Armer Bright
pleaded guilty in U.S. District Court July 1 to charges related to a kickback scheme when he worked for the Orleans Parish School Board. As the diversity contracting director, Bright conspired with former board member Ira Thomas to award a janitorial contract to a third party in exchange for a bribe. Bright is scheduled to be sentenced in September and could face five years in prison and a $250,000 fine.
