A locally owned New Orleans staple for more than 30 years, Breaux Mart (citywide; strives to provide exceptional customer service. Jason Weishaar, manager of the Magazine Street location, says he takes to heart each of the suggestions in the customer comment box.

"If somebody is looking for something they can't find, we try to respond to those requests right away and get what they need on our shelves," he says. "We really focus on customer service." He stocks many specialty products, especially items pertaining to sugar-free, gluten-free and low-sodium diets. He notes Breaux Mart carries a wide range of organic items.

Weishaar encourages customers to make requests, even for new products that are just hitting the market. "Lots of our requests are for specialty items, so we contact our specialty supplier and they are usually able to bring (the products) in right away," Weishaar says.

In addition to specialty items, the Breaux Mart to Geaux line features a variety of prepared foods. There are hot, ready-to-eat entrees, dishes to be taken home and heated, and sushi, sandwiches, dips and salads from the deli. In addition to national brands, Breaux Mart stocks a range of local products, Weishaar says. Its main supplier is based in Baton Rouge.

"We get produce from a lot of the local farmers around here," Weishaar says. "We have a pretty good selection of local beers and spirits as well."

When Breaux Mart renovated the Magazine Street location last year, it expanded the seafood offerings, along with the deli and bakery, and installed a butcher-style meat case. "It's basically a brand-new store," Weishaar says. "We've remodeled to a new, upscale look."
