Brossett in for Council race

Vies for office where he got his start

State Rep. Jared Brossett, D-New Orleans, will join the New Orleans City Council District D race this week with an official announcement at Dooky Chase Restaurant on Nov. 7.

Brossett has served in the state Legislature since 2009 as the representative from District 97, which largely covers the Gentilly neighborhood.

Prior to his election to the Legislature, Brossett was the former chief of staff to Councilwoman Cynthia Hedge-Morrell. Hedge-Morrell, who now represents District D, will be term limited in the upcoming election and already has announced her intention to run for one of the council's two at-large seats.

Brossett's interest in the job has been taken as a given for months, and he confirmed that in a telephone call with Gambit. "I've been thinking about it for a while," he said. "The Council is where I got my start as an intern some 12 or 13 years ago."

As for his goals, Brossett said they were "to continue progressive leadership on the City Council," and added that his priorities would be "health care, education, blight, increased public safety, job creation and economic development."

The primary is Feb. 1, 2014. A runoff, if needed, will be March 15. The qualifying period for all candidates is Dec. 11-13.
