Brownie, Foot in Mouth, Again

"Lobotomy" and Gabby Giffords

Former FEMA head Michael "Brownie" Brown has reinvented himself as a talk-radio gabber in Denver, but it's done nothing for his foot-in-mouth disease. Last week, Brownie was incensed over a public service announcement that ran during the Super Bowl. The ad featured Boston Mayor Tom Menino and New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg plugging the website "We both support the Second Amendment," Bloomberg said before mentioning the website, which advocates for maximum punishment for criminals who use guns in the commission of a crime. (Among the mayoral signatories: Mayor Mitch Landrieu, Baton Rouge Mayor Kip Holden and Shreveport Mayor Cedric Glover.)

A controversial position? Only to Brownie. On his website, he characterized the mayors as having an "agenda of radical gun control" — and then griped that Bloomberg mentioned the 2011 shooting of Arizona Rep. Gabrielle Giffords, who has stepped down from Congress in order to recuperate from the brain injury she suffered during the assassination attempt.

"So now we're going to use the Gabby Giffords' shooting to argue for gun control," Brown fumed. "Apparently it is a great thing she got shot because now that a congresswoman has gotten shot, well, we must do something." On his Facebook page, he made it even worse: "Listen to how illogical Mayors Against Illegal Guns sound when they open their mouths. Lobotomy recommended." He added a vintage photo of a lobotomized patient to illustrate his point.

The rant would have been crass in any case, but used in context of Giffords and her brain injury, it was mind-bogglingly insensitive. Once again, heckuva job, Brownie. — KEVIN ALLMAN & WILL COVIELLO
