Bruggers Barbecue to open at St. Roch Market 


Less than two months after Damian Brugger's abrupt departure from Central City's Black Label Icehouse (3000 Dryades St., 504-875-2876;, the pitmaster known for Texas-style brisket and ribs is moving into a new home at St. Roch Market (2381 St. Claude Ave., 504-609-3813; Bruggers Barbecue ( opens Sept. 16 in the spot formerly occupied by Dirty Dishes, which left the market earlier this month.

  Brugger, who hails from Texas, built a local following at barbecue pop-ups at Ms. Mae's and Barrel Proof. After getting forced out of the Dryades Street smokehouse he helped open in July 2015, Brugger returned to his roots, popping up outside Barrel Proof, The Courtyard Brewery and Mid-City watering hole SideBar before signing on to the St. Roch gig.

  "I'm just happy to be back in business doing what I love doing," Brugger says, adding that he'll smoke meats in a covered area behind the St. Roch building.

  Diners can expect a spread similar to what Brugger has served in the past.

  "It will be the same smorgasbord of smoked meats," Brugger says. "Brisket is my thing, so that will always be on the menu."

  There also will be pulled pork, smoked chicken, turkey and homemade sausage in a number of plate and sandwich options, plus several sides. Guests will be able to eat at the market or take out pint and quart-sized containers of barbecue to go.

  Because the vendors at the market adhere to the same hours — 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. on weekdays and 7 a.m. to 11 p.m. on weekends — Brugger will serve a selection of breakfast dishes as well. The menu may include pulled pork and waffles and a barbecue-style breakfast burrito, he says.

  At 5 p.m. Monday, Sept. 12, Brugger teams up with Company Burger's Adam Biderman for a one- night-only pop-up at Company Burger (611 O'Keefe Ave., 504-309-9422; in the CBD. Called "Company Brugger," diners can expect a mash-up of both barbecue and burgers.
