Byte Pontchartrain

Computer Know-It-All

I feel like such a ginny woman. Recently someone asked me for some emails I thought I'd saved. Turns out my whole email account had been deleted to save on server space or something. Sucks, man. I got a lot on my mind and don't have time to be dealing with this. I know a lot about recovery, but not so much about data recovery, I guess. I need some John Wayne computer dude. Can you help me out?

Old Byte's been there. Fortunately, there are some low-cost solutions to your problem.

If your server space is inadequate, a free email account from Gmail or Yahoo! might be the ticket. These services not only have almost unlimited storage space, but they also provide handy searchable backups.

You might also look into a service like, which stores the contents of your computer safely off site for a small monthly fee. Backups are automatic, which can come in handy, whether you're in New Orleans or traveling to some exotic land, like Australia. Or Dallas.

A more low-tech solution is to print out all your emails and put them in a big, thick binder. This can be handy, but be careful to keep them away from prying eyeballs — or eyebrows. For safekeeping, I suggest turning them over to a trusted advisor, such as an attorney or a sanitation director.

But don't worry: In most cases, losing all your emails is certainly an inconvenience, but it's hardly a federal crime.
