Re: “The new progressives

Sadly for some reason these people want to change the US....from everything that made it the most powerful nation on the planet, where the individual matters....to some for of socialism.

Don't they see how "well" that is doing in Venezuela....and how it is failing in other parts of the world, why do we want to change from a proven model to something that is currently being proven a failure.

Re: “New York legislators call for ban on all non-essential travel to Louisiana

Hey NYC...stay there, we're just fine with that.

We do need to strike a balance with this subject though...I think if it were to be worded that you can't discriminate serving a person of xyz status, say in a restaurant that is good. However, a person with religious beliefs against things should NOT have to actively PARTICIPATE in an event sanctioning said belief in question.

For instance, you have to serve everyone a hamburger in your restaurant, like a gay couple.
But if you are a photographer you should not have to participate in a wedding ceremony of two same sex folks if that goes against your beliefs. And if you are shooting a wedding properly....you ARE a part of the wedding. It doesn't work if you are not.

I wouldn't think a gay photographer should be forced to be able to be hired by a KKK or white supremacist group to shoot their ceremonies of whatever type they are...

A person should always be able to say "no" to participation in an event that goes against their beliefs, especially if it is a question of religious beliefs. That's one of the primary principals the US was founded upon.

That being said, I have a way to get past all this gay/straight marriage thing. Get the government OUT of the marriage business. Marriage is a religious thing. Contract enforcement IS a govt function. So, let the govt enforce relationship contracts between anyone and any number of members. Gay couple, straight couple...4 men and two women, who cares? If any of them wants to go further and have the "married" moniker added to that relationship, then find a church that will give you a marriage ceremony.

That way, we take the whole question of who can 'marry' from the public gov. sector, you can have a contractual relationship with anyone, along with the benefits of inheritance, etc.....but no one gets a marriage certification from the govt, that is a private thing between couples and their churches.

Re: “Growing Local NOLA officially opens this Saturday

Yeah, but who wants to pick veggies and dodge bullets at the same time?

Re: “Growing Local NOLA officially opens this Saturday

Geez, why can't they put any of these wonderful projects in a *SAFER* part of the city?
I would love to participate, but I don't feel like the idea of digging a hole and ducking bullets at the same time. Central City? Hollygrove? Really you can't think of a better, safer place to put these community farming things?

Re: “New Orleans bars going nonsmoking?

No one holds a gun to anyones' head to force them to be a patron or worker at bars that allow smoking.
I have recently quit smoking...it would be MUCH easier on me to avoid temptation if no smoking was allowed, BUT...this should be up to the owner of the PRIVATE establishments themselves. Let the market bear what is best.
NOLA has long been the last bastion of freedom, especially for adult actives and we are talking about adults here.
What's next? Are we going to ban the "to-go" cup? No alcohol sales on Sunday? I mean, surely those would help general public health no?

Please get the govt out of our businesses and homes and allow adults to partake in adult actives, and let private businesses decide what LEGAL activities they allow within their establishments.

Re: “Same-sex marriage in Louisiana

Here's an easy way to settle this.
Get the Govt. 100% *OUT* of the business of marriage.
Marriage is a religious thing, so, let's just have the govt sanction for EVERYONE, straight, Gay, couples, multiples….to just enforce all relationships as civil contracts. Just for legal reason, money, inheritance.

If someone wants a relationship called "marriage", they let them go to a religious body to do that, but get the govt out of the business of marriage and only have them do what they do best, help enforce contracts and agreements by 2 or more parties.

That way, no one can get mad or argue with the govt over xyz marriage.

The government should not be in the business of marriage at all.

Re: “Fighting holiday commercialization

If we were to clean the food stamp roles of the many leeches to the system, those that are able bodied and could work to afford food, we'd have much more in the system to help those that are truly hungry.

A recent news story showing a young 20 something male beach bum in CA, bragging on using his foodstamp card to buy good sushi or a lobster tail for a BBQ with friends, showed him drinking beer, having a good time...he is living the good CA beach bum life, couch surfing and getting fed by taxpayer dollars. He had no shame whatsoever in bilking the system, quite the opposite, bragging about it.

Go through and clean off the leeches and the system will be more solvent. Sure there are some that are truly needy....but so many people are on the roles today, swelling their numbers, that should NOT be there and should be out earning a living, even if it is a job 'below their standards'.

Let's go back to associating work with the welfare systems. Let's do something to make it something you do NOT want to be on, and something that you wouldn't brag about, in having to depend on the govt. dole.
