The name of the Captain who salvaged the Washington Artillery from extinction - they were down to 13 members when he took charge of it during peacetime - was James Burge Walton, not John Burgess Walton. The "Washington Artillery Association" you noted is the Washington Artillery Veterans' Association, or WAVA. It's also worthy of note that Major Wheat had been an officer with the Washington Artillery of New Orleans, and resigned from that position and from the Washington Artillery in order to form Wheat's Tigers; so the connection with LSU's symbol is much stronger than you knew. - Charles Lee of the reenacting group 5th Company, Washington Artillery of New Orleans
