Re: “Pedal Pushers

Until bicycles are treated with respect by drivers on the roads, they will never obey all traffic laws. This is a double-standard that has been used as an attack on cyclists for way too long. We are expected to obey the same laws as cars, but are not given any of the same courtesies as cars.
Cyclists are constantly harrassed by drivers for biking in the traffic lane. They are told to ride on the sidewalk. They are told to get off the sidewalk. They are forced to ride over bridges with high-speed traffic, no bike lane, no sidewalk, and dangerously wide grates only because the city does not respect them enough to give them an alternate route.

Also, there are certain laws that a cyclist may be safer breaking than obeying. If a cyclist is at a stop light with a line of cars behind her and a skinny traffic lane in front, it is often a safer choice to go through the light when there is a lull in cross-traffic, in order to get ahead of the traffic behind while passing the skinny lane ahead.
