Clint Maedgen +9 CD-Release Party

March 21

10 p.m. Saturday

Tipitina's, 501 Napoleon Ave., 895-TIPS;

For someone who doesn't actually live here (he moved to Los Angeles last summer), Clint Maedgen is one of New Orleans' most prolific artists. "I have five bands now," he says. "And I think I'd die if I couldn't work with any one of them." The +9 group is the most fluid of the bunch, which also includes the maniacal cabaret The New Orleans Bingo! Show as well as the Preservation Hall Jazz Band. For more than a year, +9 has backed Maedgen on live shows that showcase, perhaps better than any of the projects, the full extent of the singer's utter joy in performing. During events like +9's occasional Beatles cover nights, the pleasure Maedgen takes in simple, full-throated belting is palpable and gloriously infectious. On its first recording, Open Restraints, the group takes on five songs from the depths of his back catalog, an undertaking he says was cathartic. "Sometimes you have no idea what a song is going to mean to you someday when you write it," he says. "A few songs in my songbook really changed for me after the storm. And in the interest of finding that peace, writing that note and setting it on fire and throwing it in the water — that's kind of what this record is to me." — Alison Fensterstock
