Dale Chihuly: Black Work

Dale Chihuly's new Black Work expo has been called his most wide-ranging to date. Its bold colors, dramatic forms and flamboyant compositions in glass evoke subjects as diverse as ice, fire and even gigantic jellyfish among other undersea creatures. Ranging from very small to more than 14 feet in length, the series includes the arresting 8-foot Red Flame Icicle Tower and a dramatic Lamp Black and Chrysalis Chandelier (pictured). In many ways, Chihuly reflects the aspirations of the old art nouveau movement of a century ago, which resurfaced in the 1960s infatuation with 'organic" design, a concept that still resonates today. Any way you cut it, it's definitely some finely crafted stuff. What it really suggests, or means, is ultimately up to the eye — and imagination — of the viewer. — D. Eric Bookhardt
