Dong Phuong Bakery (14207 Chef Menteur Highway, 504-254-1568; will receive a James Beard Foundation America's Classics award.

The Vietnamese restaurant and bakery is known for crusty French bread used in po-boys and banh mi across the New Orleans area. Founders De Tran and Huong Tran settled in New Orleans East and opened the bakery in 1982. It was one of the area's first Vietnamese-run bakeries and catered to the larger Vietnamese community, many of whom were refugees who settled in southeast Louisiana after the Vietnam War.

Dong Phuong also is known for fresh pastries and banh mi stuffed with pate, Chinese sausage or barbecued chicken and a slather of aioli, pickled vegetables and fresh herbs.

America's Classics awards recognize longstanding businesses that have made a strong impact on the culinary community. To qualify for the award, restaurants need to have been in existence for at least 10 years and must be locally owned.

The other 2018 America's Classics award recipients include El Guero Canelo in Tucson, Arizona, Los Hernandez Tamales in Union Gap, Washington, Galleria Umberto in Boston and Sun Wah BBQ in Chicago.

The winners will be honored at the James Beard Awards gala in Chicago May 7.
