Re: “George Lucas sells Lucasfilm to Disney for $4 billion and donates the money

Encouraged to see this magnanimous gift to education by George Lucas. The article didn't mention specifics - but did a quick Google search and was impressed with his foundation's edutopia.org project to disseminate best practices and promote mobile devices for learning. It takes guts to break the mold of traditional education and branch out into new styles of learning that mirror the reality of children growing up in a technologically rich environment. Of note are the project-based and game-based learning styles promoted within the edutopia site and seen in action in a progressive school in Chicago called the Institute of Play. The Institute recently collaborated with Samsung to integrate their new Galaxy Note into the classroom and can be seen in an enlightening video on YouTube (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t0krCDFLjdA).

Will public schools have the foresight, fortitude and funds to adopt this model - or are they mired in the fight against illiteracy and "social programming" within the public school system? Nearly one in two Detroit adults - 47 percent of the population - are illiterate (http://bridgemi.com/2011/11/literacy-woes-…). Michigan Governor Rick Snyder recently noted that 238 Michigan schools have no college-ready students based on ACT exam results. These students and former students have marvelously adapted, are incredible storytellers, and have found ways to survive. My hope is that some of the funds would go toward empowering effective early literacy programs so more of our nation's kids can take advantage of the advanced tools and techniques highlighted on the edutopia.org site.
