Re: “Reveling in Recovery: Rex Duke Parade Reviews

Okeanos received the THREE CROWN REVIEW for the 2008 Parade below:

Okeanos, with 14 floats and a mild-mannered crowd, was a wonderful way to start another day of revelry, and I loved the krewe's 'Back to the Future" theme " meant to represent various aspects of New Orleans' culture that have returned post-Katrina. But, some of the float titles were so broad they could have been applied to any place. 'Fine Dining," 'Paddle Boats," 'Parks & Carousels" and 'Zoos and Shops" seemed a tad generic. I admired the 'Aquarium" float the most, with its happy octopus and brightly painted coral reefs. The costumes were traditional and the throws were generous. The Cajun Indians on horseback were a bonus, and of three marching bands, George Corliss' members beat their drums with the most vigor.

And a 2 CROWN REVIEW for 2009

Okeanos, derived of Oceanus, one of the 12 titans of Greek lore (creator of worlds, conqueror of men), chose an all-too-familiar theme this year — "Laissez les bon temps rouler." Floats were predictably adorned with crawfish, Saints logos, and one that resembled Six Flags, the local affiliate of which is shuttered. Okeanos was generous with throws, however, and the 10 bands provided ample entertainment.

1. No mention of the 17 Floats all at capacity for a Krewe in the beginning of a renaissance up from 14 partially loaded floats last year. Big improvement on membership seen even by the casual observer.2. No mention of the Improvement in the musical department other than to say 10 bands, over triple the number of bands we had last year, a 300% improvement.3. We tripled the number of overall units in our parade this year.4. No mention of the newly refurbished King and Queen Floats. This could or could not have been taken into account.5. No mention of our New Captain and the vitality of our club. This could or could not have been taken into account.

All of these things were above and beyond last years 3 crowns, how can this person be the “ the world's first and foremost parade critic” if they are going to critique a parade in this manner.
