Feed the Multitudes

The 17th annual Feed the Multitudes promises to be the largest one yet. In response to Katrina, more than a dozen churches have banded together to sponsor the free festival, an event meant to feed the needy and celebrate Independence Day with a variety of entertainment and free services. Several Christian bands will play the festival, including headliners Veronica and Angelo Petrucci. There will be jambalaya, hot dogs, barbecue chicken, arroz con pollo and desserts. Kids' entertainment includes face painting, balloons, an inflatable fun jump and water games. Entertaining skits and prayer tents are open to all ages, and there will be free health screenings, haircuts, manicures and pedicures. Habitat for Humanity will assemble a frame for a home and have applications for new Habitat homes. For the first time ever, the event will also give away bicycles, toys, clothes, furniture and appliances. Instead of Victory Fellowship's grounds, the event is being held in La Salle Park in Metairie, next to Zephyr Stadium. Bus and van pick-ups offer free transportation from various points in New Orleans, Jefferson and LaPlace. Call to find the nearest pick-up point. -- Will Coviello
