Brandy Alexanders are often made with ice cream and probably should be savored after dinner around the holidays, if only to ensure that the turkey makes it to the table. In my household, however, we drink them as milky aperitifs, pouring them as soon as the women in the kitchen say they need them. Don't fuss over the brandy; Korbel or E&J will warm belly and spirit just as well as any high-end brand. This is what you will need: crushed ice (I put ice cubes in a large, Ziploc bag and whack them with a rolling pin), a cocktail shaker (Mason jars with lids also work), brandy, dark creme de cacao and half-and-half. Place the equivalent of one ice cube per 8-oz. serving into the cocktail shaker. Pour in equal parts of brandy, creme de cacao and half-and-half. The colder these drinks get the better, so shake them until you think the mixture is frosty, and then keep shaking for another minute. Strain Alexanders into wide-mouthed glasses. Don't ask why. It's just tradition.
The Crescent City Farmers Market will be closed on Christmas Day, but stop by on Saturday, Dec. 29 for a pre-New Year's celebration. At 10 a.m. the vendors will channel luck for the year to come by serving black-eyed peas and cabbage.
