Eat Your Words
Even a tortured writer must eat, so the Tennessee Williams/New Orleans Literary Festival ( has scheduled several events to celebrate the connections between fine food and well-crafted prose. Marda Burton and Kenneth Holditch, authors of Galatoire's: Biography of a Bistro (Hill Street), will share stories about the famed local establishment and its patrons on at 3 p.m. Thursday, March 31, at, where else, Galatoire's (209 Bourbon St., 525-2021; Tickets $10.

Many works of literary genius have been fueled by a few cases of wine. At 5:30 p.m. Friday, April 1, at the Windsor Court Hotel (300 Gravier St., 523-6000; www.windsorcourthotel), wine expert and Esquire food columnist John Mariani will answer questions about choosing the perfect wine and share his insights on the latest national restaurant trends. Be sure to ask if aspiring romance novelists should drink white or blush. Tickets $25.

Literature comes to life at 5 p.m. Saturday, April 2, when Sara Moulton, executive chef of Gourmet and host of the Food Network's Sara's Secrets, and Michael Green, Gourmet's wine consultant, take over the kitchen at Brennan's (417 Royal St., 525-9711; to prepare a meal inspired by Southern literary classics. The event, &179;Tennessee Sips -- The Pen and the Palate,&178; includes dinner and libations. Tickets $50.

Sara Moulton returns at 10 a.m. Sunday, April 3, to discuss food writing in works ranging from cookbooks to novels. The panel of literary and culinary luminaries also includes local author Poppy Z. Brite, who recently released Prime (Three Rivers), and William Grimes, former restaurant critic for The New York Times and editor of Eating Your Words (Oxford). The &179;Words to Eat By&178; discussion takes place at La Nouvelle Meeting Space of the Hotel Monteleone (214 Rue Royal, 523-3341; An 11:30 a.m. book signing and tasting, with food provided by many of New Orleans' leading restaurants, follows the panel discussion. Tickets $25 for each event.

Snow in April
The Garden District Book Shop (2727 Prytania St., 895-2266) hosts a book signing by Constance Snow, Times-Picayune columnist and award-winning cookbook author, on from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, April 2. In The Rustic Table (HarperCollins), her latest cookbook, Snow recreates the hearty and unpretentious dishes of more than 25 countries.

125 Years of Bid-ness
People book the chef's table inside the kitchen at Commander's Palace (1403 Washington Ave., 899-8221; a year in advance. The lucky winner of an eBay auction (, which runs from Wednesday to Friday, April 8, will have reservations for four for the last Saturday of this year's Jazz Fest and watch Chef Tory McPhail prepare them a seven-course Creole tasting menu. The auction, the first event scheduled to celebrate the 125th anniversary of Commander's Palace, benefits the American Heart Association.
