An Open Boca

The owners of RioMar (800 S. Peters St., 525-3474; have opened an Argentine-style steakhouse called La Boca (857 Fulton St., 525-8205). Chef Adolfo Garcia and his business partner and Buenos Aires native Nicolas Bazan lightly renovated the former Warehouse District location of Taqueria Corona (which remains open in Uptown and Harahan), retaining its interior of brick and ancient-looking cypress posts. Beef, of course, is the specialty, with some very large and uncommon cuts prepared in the South American style of richly crusted exteriors cloaking tender meat within. There is also a daily selection of pastas, appetizers like blood sausage, empanadas and grilled provolone and a list of South American and Spanish wines. The general manager is Orestes Rodriguez, the longtime maitre d' of La Riviera Restaurant , and the chef is Jared Ralls, most recently chef of Vega Tapas Café . La Boca is open for dinner Monday through Saturday and — in a nod to the vampiristic hours favored by Buenos Aires diners — it stays open until midnight Thursday through Saturday. "La Boca" is Spanish for "the mouth" but it is also the name of a colorful Buenos Aires neighborhood as well as an Argentine soccer team. Recovery on Display The Southern Food and Beverage Museum ( is presenting its exhibit "Come Hell or High Water: Stories of Eating, Drinking and Surviving in Katrina's Wake" at the Ogden Museum of Southern Art (925 Camp St., 539-9600; The exhibit, which premiered at the New Orleans-themed James Beard Awards in New York this spring, chronicles the rebirth of the local restaurant industry since Hurricane Katrina. The multimedia exhibit includes photos, written and filmed interviews and a mural. It will be on display until Sept. 30.

Whole Healing

Whole Foods Market (5600 Magazine St., 899-9119; will donate 5 percent of its sales at its Uptown store on Thursday, June 29, to the New Orleans Police & Justice Foundation Andres Gonzalez Fund . Officer Gonzalez was shot three times and critically wounded following a routine traffic stop in Algiers in late May. Activities such as K-9 unit demonstrations are planned throughout the day at the Uptown store.

Chef's Grants

The Emeril Lagasse Foundation ( will make $125,000 in Community Impact grants in the New Orleans area this summer. The foundation, created by New Orleans-based chef Emeril Lagasse in 2003, will provide $25,000 to Central City's nonprofit Café Reconcile , $25,000 for summer and fall scholarships at St. Michael's Special School , $20,000 for the Contemporary Arts Center Summer Arts Camp and $5,000 for God's Vineyard Seven Pepper Hot Sauce project from Parkway Partners .ÊThe foundation also gave $50,000 to children's summer camp programs. More grants are planned for later in the year.
