Making a Market A new outdoor market is starting this Wednesday, Aug. 15, in Lakeview as a monthly venue for food, music and crafts while also showcasing the recovery of one of the neighborhoods hardest hit by the levee failures. The market is a project of Beacon of Hope Resource Center (309-5120;, a nonprofit formed last year to help residents and businesses rebuild. It will be held the third Wednesday of each month at 801 Harrison Ave. in the parking lot of the former Lakeview Fine Foods store from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m., and interested vendors are welcome to apply for future markets. At its inaugural run this week, look for food from restaurants like CafŽ Adelaide (300 Poydras St., 595-3305;, boiled seafood and sno-balls. Raffle prizes include gift certificates to EmerilÕs Restaurant and Hiller Jewelers and a football signed by New Orleans Saints quarterback Drew Brees.

ThereÕs no lack of budget-minded specials to lure locals out to fine-dining restaurants during the summer tourism lull, from the citywide Coolinary campaign ( organized by the New Orleans Metropolitan Convention and Visitors Bureau to prix fixe seasonal offerings by individual restaurants. Later this week, on Sunday, Aug. 19, a new campaign begins that adds a charitable angle to specially priced menus. The Italian sparkling-water bottler S. Pellegrino has enlisted 22 local restaurants to offer three-course lunches for $25 or dinners for $35 and has pledged to donate $1 for each meal to Share Our Strength (, a national hunger relief organization that has been especially active in the Gulf Coast region since Hurricane Katrina. The program will be held from Sunday to Thursday for two consecutive weeks, Aug. 19 to Aug. 23 and Aug. 26 to Aug. 30. Diners participating in the special also get a free bottle of S. Beach Bound

CommanderÕs Palace (1403 Washington Ave., 899-8221; plans to open a new restaurant as part of a beachfront resort in Destin, Fla. The restaurant will be run by Ti Martin and Lally Brennan, managing partners of the original CommanderÕs Palace, and will be part of HarborWalk Village (, an upscale shopping, dining and marina development with a fishing village theme on Destin Harbor. HarborWalkÕs developer says the BrennanÕs new 8,000-sqaure-foot restaurant will open next summer and join a number of other New Orleans-based businesses expanding at the site. For instance, the development will also include a branch of Pat OÕBrienÕs (718 St. Peter St., 525-4823;, the iconic French Quarter bar, and Jester Mardi Gras Daiquiris (, which has four locations on or near Bourbon Street. The Brennan family opened an expansion of CommanderÕs Palace in Las Vegas a few years ago, but the restaurant closed earlier this year. Ñ McNulty
