Cynthia Hedge-Morrell and Jason Williams get heated

Endorsements and mudslinging in the City Council at-large race

Freddie Charbonnet, the third-place finisher in the race for the open City Council At-Large seat, last week threw his support behind veteran City Councilwoman Cynthia Hedge-Morrell. That race got more heated last week when challenger Jason Williams filed complaints with the Board of Election Supervisors, the New Orleans Inspector General's office and the Louisiana Secretary of State charging Hedge-Morrell with campaigning inside the Guste High-Rise Retirement Community, a Central City senior living center that was being used as a polling place on the day of the primary election, Feb. 1.

Hedge-Morrell dismissed the complaints, bus said she did stop at Guste as part of visiting constituents across the city on Election Day.

Meanwhile, an anonymous attack website popped up, criticizing Williams, whose slogan is "Run With Jason." The new website,, brought up tax liens against Williams, an issue which surfaced during the primary. (Williams said he'd made good on most of them and disputed some of the remainder.) Meanwhile, Williams launched his own salvo against Hedge-Morrell in an ad simply titled "Hypocrite," bringing up another old issue: Hedge-Morrell and her husband, Clerk of Court Arthur Morrell, admitted not having paid the sanitation fee on their municipal water bill for almost 10 years.
