Friends of Music: LPO Chamber Orchestra

Friends of Music presents its third concert of the 2006 season with a special performance by the Louisiana Philharmonic Orchestra's (LPO) chamber orchestra. The LPO has suffered the loss of its concert hall due to floodwaters and has members scattered far and wide, but this performance is a joyful reunion for many musicians, as members trickle back to the region. Alfred Savia, who is a past associate conductor for the Indianapolis Symphony as well as a guest conductor both nationally and internationally, will conduct the chamber orchestra. The LPO ensemble performs Mozart's Divertimento in D Major, K. 136, Svorak's Serenade for Winds, Opus 44, and Dvorak's Serenade for Strings, Opus 22. Usually, Friends of Music brings non-local chamber orchestras to New Orleans to expose residents to ensembles they might never hear, but this performance allows locals to enjoy their homegrown ensemble after a long hiatus, and simultaneously supports one of our great cultural cornerstones. Tulane University's musicologist James Joyce will lead a free pre-concert discussion at 7 p.m. Free parking. Tickets available at the door: Tickets $18 general admission, $10 students, free for Tulane. -- Katie Walenter
