Fulton Street Live!

Harrah's has been nurturing a scene on Fulton Street, and it becomes an improvised Winter Wonderland this week with 'Miracle on Fulton Street" opening, complete with falling snow and holiday-themed festivities. Perhaps less conspicuously, the jazz club 528 on Fulton (opened just after Katrina) has integrated itself into New Orleans proper with almost-nightly bookings of local artists in the cozy den of a bar. Now its kicking back some support to the community where it really helps " via the pocketbook " with the release of Fulton Street Live, a CD whose sales will go directly to the Tipitina's Foundation. Pianist and composer Larry Sieberth produced the album during closed live sessions at the bar, pairing 528 gig alums like Troi Bechet, Ingrid Lucia and Don Vappie with a variety of all-star combos. The result is a judicious, thoughtful exposition of New Orleans jazz vocals at their best. It's the kind of music that makes you feel a little more civilized and soigné just by listening to it " as if you were sipping Rob Roys at the Stork Club, though that's not to say it's simply easy listening. Luther Kent's take on Big Joe Turner's 'Flip, Flop and Fly" is slow-growing R&B, and Sharon Martin turns Gloria Gaynor's disco anthem 'I Will Survive" into a sophisticated cha-cha. The CD drops this week. — Alison Fensterstock
