Georg Graewe

German pianist Georg Graewe's work moves between sedate and frenetic, improvised and composed. Ostensibly a jazz musician, his playing also refers to modern classical and European new music. All this means is that aside from it being good, a listener is never sure what his concerts will be and which way they will veer. At Snug Harbor, he is joined by saxophonist Tim Green and drummer Johnny Vidacovich, which suggests this show could be more mainstream, though all three can joyously toss jazz rules off the balcony at a moment's notice. Graewe is joined by bassist James Singleton, cellist Helen Gillet, trombonist Rick Trolsen and drummer Dave Capello at the Zeitgeist performance. This lineup seems to imply a more avant garde journey. All the local musicians have performed together for years, so their interplay is more than coherent. How a master like Graewe will mess with their groove promises to be exciting and improvisatory, which is what jazz is all about. Tickets $15 at Snug Harbor; $7 general admission, $6 students/seniors, $5 children/members at Zeitgeist. — David Kunian
