Heart Fruit

Loaded with beta-cryptoxanthin, beta-carotene, alpha-carotene, lutein, flavones, folate, potassium, and, of course, vitamin C, oranges are the perfect Louisiana fruit to celebrate February's American Heart Month. The American Heart Association (AHA) recommends at least four and a half cups of fresh fruit and vegetables per day. Oranges also are a good source to get the AHA's suggested minimum of 25 grams per day. (A large orange has about 2.5 grams of fiber — get the remaining 23 grams from other in-season foodstuffs such as greens, beans and nuts.) As the month comes to a close, choose from blood and navel oranges, as well as grapefruit, from the Hollygrove Market & Farm — the citrus selection includes sweet stuff offered by Isabelle's Organics from English Turn and L'Hoste Citrus from Braithwaite.
