Herringbone Orchestra CD-Release Party

Courtney Lain has done well musically by speaking softly and carrying a big accorgan. The haunting sound of Lain's accordion/organ hybrid was first heard in New Orleans nearly a decade ago via her duo Baby Rosebud. Sea Witch, her debut recording on the local Gallatin Records label, finds her adapting many of that band's songs for a larger ensemble. The Herringbone Orchestra finds Lain conducting a sprawling array of horns, reeds and harp for an effect very much in tune with the record's title. The deep and dreamy ambient instrumental music pitches and yaws like a vessel crossing a gentle ocean at night, with just enough sinister tone to threaten, maybe, lurking sea monsters. Arranging songs for a group nearly quintuple the size of Baby Rosebud seems to have posed little stress. The bandleader weaves together the many eccentric elements so subtly that the pitch of a dog's howl (credited in the liner notes to Lain's dog, Wren) marries flawlessly with a wavering theremin. Opening is the old-timey local ensemble Hurray For the Riff Raff, which is fond of hobo-jungle style instrumentation like the musical saw. The band Magnolia Beacon also performs, and there will be a short puppet show from Mr. Quintron and Miss Pussycat. Tickets $8. — Alison Fensterstock
