Holly Golightly

After spending four years in the early '90s banging out rough-edged girl-group garage rock with Thee Headcoatees, a splinter group from underground icon Billy Childish's Headcoats, Holly Golightly went her own way. Veering off from her previous band's lo-fi, trash style, her solo work has a more soft-spoken, alt-country and blues aesthetic without failing to bring the rock 'n' roll. Since 1995, she has been as prolific as Childish, releasing 10 full-length studio albums as well as a scattering of EPs and live projects, including 2004's Down Gina's at 3 -- a beautifully intimate rocker recorded at a gig backed by the raucous Greenhornes. Her latest album, Slowly But Surely (Phantom), showcases her more subdued side, as well as her formidable songwriting chops. On it, her smooth, soulful vocals slink through a collection of unpolished gems drawing from R&B, blues and folk-rock. The haunting title track, with a shiveringly mournful organ intro, is a contemporary soul classic. Tom Heinl opens. Tickets $7.
