How can I prevent wrinkles?

While eventually everyone is bound to get a few creases here or there, there are some steps you can take to prevent yourself from looking like a Shar Pei as you age.

Stay out of the sun.

You’ve heard it before, and here it is again. The sun is the number one culprit when it comes to wrinkles; so if you want to avoid wrinkles, avoid the sun. Wearing sunscreen, makeup or moisturizer with an SPF of at least 15 will go a long way toward keeping the wrinkles at bay. Also consider dawning a hat or sunglasses when going outside. Not only will these shade your skin from harmful UV rays, they can also keep you from squinting—another cause of crow’s feet.

Stop smoking.

Smoking can wreak havoc on your health and your looks. Heavy smokers tend to exhibit more wrinkles in general than non-smokers. Because of repetitive puckering and squinting, smoking can also exacerbate wrinkles around the mouth and eyes.

Use moisturizer.

Although it is only a temporary fix, moisturizer can penetrate the top layers of skin, plumping it up and making wrinkles less apparent.

Sleep on your back.

Over time, sleeping on your sides can cause wrinkles in the areas where your face is pressed into the pillows.

Embrace antioxidants.

Antioxidants such as green tea, vitamins C and E, and coenzyme Q10 are good choices for fighting wrinkles. Pollution, UV rays and stress can cause free radicals to lay siege to your skin. However, antioxidants help to neutralize these wrinkle-causing culprits. Eating a diet rich in fruits and vegetables is a good start. Antioxidants can also be found in some vegetable oils and meats. There are also several topical products such as moisturizers and anti-aging skin creams that contain antioxidants.
