Jay Reatard at One Eyed Jacks

Judged by its cover, Jay Reatard's latest record — either his third or 33rd solo release, if you count 7-inch singles — is either Meat Loaf's lost black-metal album or the work of a seriously macabre hobbit. Hunching over and glaring back beneath a mop of stringy hair, Reatard's visage on Watch Me Fall (issued in August by Matador) is the epitome of misrepresentation. The album bursts out of the gate with "It Ain't Gonna Save Me," and proves a charitable roundup of the punk yeoman's cherished songwriting gifts: nervy, high-pitched whines; propulsive, on-the-two drum hits; and the most terminally catchy guitar lines since, well, Reatard's last singles collection. The Goner Records alumnus has released 30 mostly stellar songs in that format since 2006, when he broke out alone after years of fronting Memphis garage and punk rock outfits the Reatards and Lost Sounds. Prior to this show, he opened a series of East Coast arena gigs for the revived Pixies, so the vibe inside One Eyed Jacks should be downright homey. Tickets $12. — Noah Bonaparte Pais
