Jazz Funeral for Helen Hill

As a coda to the merriment of Mardi Gras comes this bittersweet, purely New Orleans-style party in honor of Helen Hill. The horrific murder of the Marigny resident and transplanted-local filmmaker helped galvanize the outrage of many people in the city. They voiced their response to the out-of-control crime that's been steadily escalating since Katrina with a march to City Hall last month. That gathering was a symbol of all the lives that shouldn't have been threatened or lost. This event is for Hill as the friend, neighbor and believer in her beloved city of New Orleans. The parade forms at Hill's old house in Mid-City with multiple brass bands and Emperor of the Universe Ernie K-Doe's famous hearse, and winds up at Antoinette K-Doe's Mother-In-Law Lounge at 1500 N. Claiborne Ave. for a vegan-cupcake tea party and live music. Free and open to the public. -- Alison Fensterstock
