Glad I work at a weekly community paper...Ain't no stinkin' lay-offs there!

But in all seriousness, it is a shame. I looked up to Purpura and Pope greatly. We need to innovate as an industry. We need to try out unconventional ideas that the old-timer reporters may be adverse to.

I suggest we include our readership in the news production process. Embrace citizen journalism and crowd reporting. I have a business-model that I've been sitting on for a few years that could be successful, but would piss off nearly all reporters and editors over 40-years-old.

We need to accept that the old model of deciding what is newsworthy for our readers, filtering news from the top to bottom (i.e. publisher->editor->some other editor->reporter->reader) and expecting ad sales to support our newsroom is archaic and self-destructive.

Times, minds and attitudes have changed. So should we.
