Joan Benge has campaign funds left

Former state Judge Joan Benge, recently removed from the bench in Jefferson Parish, still has $47,392.94 in campaign funds left over from her successful 2008 re-election campaign, according to the Louisiana Board of Ethics. "She can save (funds) for another race or she can use it to support other candidates or ballot propositions," says Alesia Ardoin, a staff attorney for the ethics board. Benge also can return the funds to her campaign contributors or donate the money to charity. She may not use the money to pay for her defense of judicial ethics violations that led to her removal from the bench, however. Benge's campaign bankroll remains subject to restrictions by the state Code of Judicial Conduct. She still faces the possible loss of her law license for allegedly allowing former Judge Ronald Bodenheimer to unduly influence her decision in a civil matter in 2001. Benge denies any wrongdoing. She was re-elected without opposition in 2002 and 2008. She worked as a Jefferson Parish prosecutor from 1991-2001. — Allen Johnson Jr.
