Krewe of OAK

Uptown institution the Krewe of OAK ('Outrageous And Kinky") can't wait a whole year for costumed mayhem " so it parades in midsummer as well. This Carnival, the group celebrates its 20th anniversary of strutting in the streets of the normally sedate Carrollton neighborhood. Tickets to the post-parade ball " where 2008 Krewe of OAK monarch Phil Frazier will hold down the bandstand with the Rebirth Brass Band " are only available through krewe members, but the three-hour-plus parade and pub crawl preceding the party is a genuine fete in its own right. Brass bands and costumed revelers, including the Bearded Oysters (pictured) and Pussyfooters marching clubs, roll from the Maple Leaf to Carrollton Station at 8:30 p.m., as krewe members pull floats honoring neighborhood celebrities. The route continues to Snake and Jake's Christmas Club Lounge, then past the watering holes of Maple Street and back to the Leaf by midnight. The parade is free, ball tickets $40. — Alison Fensterstock
