Lloyd Price

Kenner native (a street in Rivertown is now named for him) and bona fide rhythm-and-blues-legend Lloyd Price -- otherwise known as "Mr. Personality" from his 1963 hit -- is probably best known for the 1952 tune "Lawdy Miss Clawdy," a classic New Orleans-style R&B tune that was produced by studio legend Dave Bartholomew with none other than Fats Domino on the piano. In the early '50s, Price was a top star on the Specialty Records label, cutting multiple sides all stamped with the signature New Orleans piano sound until he was drafted into the Army. After the Korean War, Price emerged as a rather shrewd music-industry player. He leased his recordings to the ABC-Paramount label, maintaining control while getting national distribution, and later on helmed his own Double L and Turntable labels, the former of which was responsible for launching the career of Wilson Pickett. In 1974, Price partnered up with Don King to promote the legendary "Rumble In The Jungle" boxing event and monster R&B revue in Africa, bringing Bill Withers, Etta James, James Brown and Little Richard to Zaire. In 1998, he was inducted into the Rock 'n' Roll Hall of Fame. As a rather odd postscript, Price also started a company that makes cookies and cereal products with African-American cultural figures on the packaging. In any case, club gigs in his hometown are infrequent for Price. This rare appearance at Tip's is sure to be an event. Tickets $25. -- Alison Fensterstock
